In the late 17th century, a new settlement emerged in Basmannaya Sloboda, Kapitanskaya, founded by foreign regiments. Soldiers traced out Novaya Basmannaya Street, creating a direct route from the city center to the residence of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. Before long, officials and nobles began buying land along the road, and elegant town estates started to line the way. Nikolai Golovin purchased plots here and later became Heraldmaster. The property then passed to Nikita Demidov, who built an early Classicist estate ensemble. The style of the estate is attributed to early classicism and is rightly compared to the signature style of the famed Matvey Kazakov, although the name of the actual architect has been lost.
In 1805, Prince Mikhail Golitsyn purchased the Estate and amassed an art collection comparable to the Hermitage. However, at the end of the 1820s, his fortunes had collapsed, and the collection was sold off.

The estate garden is a subtle homage to the age of Classicism and its great thinkers, whose volumes once filled the libraries of the Demidovs and the Golitsyns. It is also a careful reinterpretation of landmark landscape masterpieces, reshaped in a new reading into a more minimalist and functional form.
